Bannockburn Shiraz 2022

Bannockburn Shiraz is a mid-weight Geelong Shiraz from old, south-facing vines.

Three sources feed it: the south-facing Winery Block planted in 1990, the Range Block from 1974, and some declassified De La Roche from 2007, all on volcanic scoria over basalt, clay and loam above limestone-clay. Spontaneous fermentation with 10 per cent bunches and plenty of carbonic maceration was followed by two weeks on skins, then pressing, settling, and ten months in a combination of French hogsheads and puncheons with 10 per cent new. Holmes reads this mature block as savoury by nature and keeps the wood in the background so the fruit stays bright.

Deft and silky, with savoury depth, bright berry fruit, root spice and graphite-mineral tones, anchored by sinewy structure and star-bright acidity. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. Lamb rack, duck, or a tomato and eggplant bake.
