Bannockburn Shiraz Museum 2003

Bannockburn Shiraz Museum is a twenty-year-old Geelong Shiraz released from the estate’s own cellar.

Gary Farr made this one, drawing on two estate Shiraz blocks: the Winery Block, first planted in 1990 and widened six years on, and the Range Block, which dates to 1974. The 2003 season was warm, and the wine was rich and powerful on release. Two decades in the cool of the Bannockburn cellar have taken it somewhere else entirely, into mature, deeply savoury Victorian Shiraz with a freshness its age does not predict. Wines with this kind of provenance rarely reach a retail shelf, and almost never at this price.

Leather, dried fig, earth and old spice, with tannin long since settled and the fruit still holding on. Serve at 17 degrees; no decanting required, just a careful pour off any sediment. Roast beef, mushrooms on toast, or hard aged cheese.
