Bannockburn Winery Block Chardonnay 2024

Bannockburn Winery Block Chardonnay is a limited single-vineyard Chardonnay from the heart of the estate.

The block went into the ground in 1981 while the winery itself was being built, planted to Chardonnay P58, the old Penfolds clone, and it has formed the core of the estate Chardonnay ever since. That consistent citrus, orchard fruit and struck-match character in the Estate wine comes from here. Soils shift from dark brown clay to sandier topsoil over weathered basalt and limestone, and although the 5.3-acre block ripens early, picking is spread across several days to catch each section. This inaugural bottling is a barrel selection, drawn mostly from the earlier-ripening sections in a warm year, with 40 per cent new oak.

Layers of pulpy texture and purity: stone fruit, matchstick and a hay-like savour stretching out like satin, closing on a bright streak of chalky acidity. Serve at 12 to 13 degrees. Roast chicken, crayfish, or a leek tart.
