Beau Rivage Chenin Blanc 2019

Beau Rivage Chenin Blanc is a dry, barrel-raised Chenin Blanc from 1960s vines in Clarksburg.

Yields fell by half in 2019, and the extra concentration shows as volume and texture instead of weight. Kelley works more solids into the ferment with each vintage, and the wines take their drive from time on lees in old, low-toast Burgundy barrels. The picking method is unusual: two passes through the vineyard, crushing the sun-exposed fruit for extract and whole-cluster pressing the shaded side on a long, firm cycle, then fermenting on indigenous yeast. The vines date to the 1960s and are farmed organically by a grower Kelley and Frank Ingriselli have worked with for years.

Tense and refreshing with real succulence, yellow flowers and dandelion over the subtler Chenin hints of pine resin and lanolin, and salinity turned up a notch on the close. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees. Pork, roast chicken, or wild-caught fish.
