Benjamin Leroux Bourgogne Rouge 1.5L MAGNUM 2020

Benjamin Leroux Bourgogne Rouge is a regional Burgundy assembled from the Côte de Beaune sites its maker uses for his village wines, offered here in magnum.

Bourgogne Rouge is the broad regional appellation of the Côte d'Or, and its quality depends almost entirely on where the fruit is grown. Benjamin Leroux, who set up his own Beaune-based house in 2007 after years running Domaine du Comte Armand in Pommard, draws this cuvée from Maison Dieu in Pommard, Mon Poulain in Volnay and Belles Côtes in Meursault, complemented by 20 per cent village wine from Saint-Romain and Monthelie and three barrels of Bourgogne from Vosne-Romanée. In style it remains a Côte de Beaune wine through and through. The grapes were entirely de-stemmed, and maturation took place in 2,200-litre Grenier oak casks with support from a few 228-litre Burgundian barriques. There was next to no new oak, which suits a wine whose appeal lies in fruit intensity, purity and length rather than cellar work.

Ready now and good for five or six years, the magnum format slowing things further. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, mushroom risotto or a plate of charcuterie.
