Description
Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Cave des Ducs is a 0.64-hectare monopole and the highest premier cru in Volnay.
The clos belongs to the family of Jean-Charles Carré, Leroux's right-hand man, and was rarely bottled on its own before Leroux began working with it in 2007. The soils are fine and light, and the altitude keeps the fruit fresh in warm years. Vine age runs to 80 years with an average around 50, and the planting includes 20-year-old massale selections taken from Comte Armand's Clos des Épeneaux. The site is farmed biodynamically and is where Carré and Leroux trial their more progressive viticulture. Leroux has observed that recent harvests have moved the wine towards a finer, more floral expression, helped by fermentation with a high proportion of whole berries. The result is silky rather than structural, with clear drive through the finish.
Approachable at three years and good for twelve. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, guinea fowl or mushrooms on toast.
