Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots 2024

Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots is a Pinot Noir from a hectare of seventy-year-old estate vines in the Les Plures lieu-dit.

Asked years ago which single Volnay vineyard he would most like to work, Leroux answered Santenots without pausing. He had been buying his friend Dominique Lafon's bottling every vintage and could not shake it. The chance finally came in 2018. Santenots lies on the Meursault side of the boundary, where clay dominates and the wines come out perfumed but properly built, and this is now one of the few parcels he owns outright. Whole bunches made up forty per cent of the 2024 ferment.

Fine-boned and intense, with dark cherry, iron and a long savoury close. This is a keeper: give it ten years, or decant hard and serve at 17 degrees if you cannot wait. Beef, game birds, aged hard cheese.
