Bessin-Tremblay Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume La Pièce au Comte 2022

Bessin-Tremblay Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume La Pièce au Comte is a single-hectare parcel in the heart of Fourchaume, named after the aristocrat who once owned it.

Fourchaume is the largest and best known of Chablis’ right-bank premier crus, running along the same Kimmeridgian slope that carries the grand crus. La Pièce au Comte was the Tremblay family’s first holding in Chablis. Its oldest vines, planted in 1934, were replanted in 2014 with massale cuttings; the remainder date from the 1950s. Romain Bessin notes that the vines here suffer from court-noué, the fanleaf virus, which reduces vigour and concentrates both sugar and acidity in the fruit that does set. The result is deeper and more powerful than the domaine’s straight Fourchaume, at once more intense and, oddly, more weightless. Maturation was split evenly between tank and barrel, with less than 10 per cent of the wood new, so the oak sits well behind the fruit.

Drink from a year or two out to about ten. Serve at 10-12°C with oysters, grilled snapper or a soft goat’s cheese.
