Blind Corner Quindalup Chardonnay Aligoté 2021

Blind Corner Quindalup Chardonnay Aligoté is a Burgundy-inspired white blend from a single certified organic and biodynamic block.

Aligoté barely exists in Australia, and the 150-odd vines at Quindalup are believed to be Margaret River's only planting. The long-term plan is to graft more Chardonnay over to it, then propagate from the best of that material. The Chardonnay itself is old Gin Gin clone, past twenty years of age and cropping very low, and Gould has patiently converted the vines from spur to cane pruning. Both parcels were hand-harvested, foot-stomped and fermented on wild yeasts, four-fifths in old barrels and the rest in a concrete egg. Only a rough filtration follows, in his words to keep the wine close to the vineyard.

Nectarine and lemon with a nutty, lees-derived depth, the Aligoté drawing a sharp line of acid through the middle. Serve at 11 degrees. Roast chicken, grilled scallops, or a mushroom tart; it also handles a plate of soft cheese well.
