Bodegas Exopto Rioja Bozeto de Exopto 1.5L MAGNUM 2022

Bodegas Exopto Bozeto de Exopto is the estate's entry-level Rioja, unusual in leading with Grenache rather than Tempranillo, offered here in magnum.

Bozeto means sketch, and the wine is conceived as a lively introduction to Tom Puyaubert's range, drawing on all three of Rioja's principal red varieties from across the region. Where most entry-level Rioja now rests on Tempranillo, Grenache makes up 60 per cent of this blend, grown on the sandy, river-stone soils of El Agudo, a sixty-year-old plot at Alfaro on Monte Yerga in Rioja Oriental. The Tempranillo comes from mature vines at Ábalos in high-country Rioja Alta, with Graciano from the same village adding freshness and finesse. Fermentation takes place in a mix of concrete and steel, now with a portion of semi-carbonic maceration for buoyancy, and the wine is aged for six months in concrete and 5,000-litre oak vats. The magnum format suits its style and gives a slower rate of development.

Drink over the next four or five years, ideally with a crowd. Good with charcuterie, grilled lamb skewers or a mushroom pizza, at 16°C or lightly chilled in summer.
