Bondar Adelaide Hills Chardonnay 2022

Bondar Adelaide Hills Chardonnay is an east-facing, Bernard clone Chardonnay from the Adelaide Hills.

Fruit has come from the same Adelaide Hills vineyard every year since 2013, which is long enough to know it properly. Rathmine, at Echunga, sits at 450 metres on stony, shallow clay loam over limestone, and this wine comes off its east-facing Bernard clone rows: morning sun, afternoon shade, slow ripening. Yields were down in 2022, but the cool and even conditions gave fruit with tight structure and generous texture. Hand-picked early, whole-bunch pressed, fermented naturally in French oak with about a quarter new, full malolactic conversion, and no lees stirring.

Steely and intensely flavoured, with stone fruit and grilled nuts, phenolic tension through the middle and bracing acid driving the finish. Serve at 12 degrees. Roast pork, scallops, or a leek and gruyère tart straight from the oven.
