Bondar Nero 2024

Bondar Nero draws on two contrasting McLaren Vale sites for a fresh, mid-weight Nero d'Avola.

Two vineyards feed this wine now. The long-standing grower sits in the Sellicks Foothills behind Willunga at 100 metres, west-facing on rocky alluvial clay, giving high-toned aromatics and soft red berry. The newer parcel lies near Tatachilla on black Biscay clay, between the Bondar home and the coast, and brings density and structure. Tatachilla is the warmer site and came in first, with Willunga following three weeks later; the former was destemmed and fermented for twelve days, the latter went in as bunches for a fortnight. Blending and bottling happened in September. Sixth release, and Andre Bondar has kept it youthful throughout.

Berry fruit, spice and an earthy thread, held together by lively acidity and a savoury finish. Best at 14 degrees, straight out of a short stint in the fridge door. Good with grilled chicken, eggplant parmigiana, or a plate of salumi.
