Description
Bondar Rayner Vineyard Grenache is a single-block wine from 1970 vines on McLaren Vale sand.
Low yields are the starting point. This block sits on very sandy ground, part of the Pirramimma sandstone geology, dry-grown and organically farmed; facing east on the vineyard's western side, it misses the hottest late-afternoon sun and sets small bunches and small berries. Picking comes earlier here than at most neighbouring estates, which holds the red fruit and herb characters in place and keeps alcohol honest. A fifth of the crop goes into the spontaneous ferment as whole bunches to build structure and longevity, and maturation runs six months split between ceramic eggs and French barrels.
Seductive on the nose and tightly coiled on the palate — bright berry fruit, spice, supple tannin and a mineral, faintly talcy finish. Give it air and pour at 16 degrees. Slow-cooked lamb shoulder, duck ragù, or grilled haloumi with capsicum.
