Description
Bondar Rayner Vineyard Shiraz is a limited release built from two 1950-planted blocks on the estate's home vineyard.
Block 24, in the vineyard's northeast corner, contributes three-quarters of the wine; its dry-grown, organically managed vines sit on deep sand flecked with ironstone. The remainder comes from Block 1 in the northwestern corner, on shallow clay over a limestone base, farmed the same way. Natural ferment with about 20 per cent whole bunches, then eighteen months in mostly older French hogsheads — five per cent new oak, no more — and bottling without fining or filtration. Light summer rains, warm days and cool nights made 2021 one of the most complete McLaren Vale growing seasons of the past decade, and the wine reflects it.
Dark fruit and cracked pepper with a floral edge, then a palate that is full but never heavy, tannins fine and acid line clean. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. Lamb rump, beef and Guinness pie, or grilled eggplant with tahini.
