Description
Bondar Rayner Vineyard Shiraz is a McLaren Vale Shiraz sourced from two 1950 blocks on deep sand and clay over limestone.
Three-quarters of the fruit comes from Block 24 in the vineyard's northeast corner, on deep sand with ironstone, dry-grown and organic — this is the fragrance and the fine frame. The rest is cropped from Block 1 in the northwestern corner, sitting in a cool gully where shallow clay over limestone builds firmer structure around the fleshier sandy portion. Fermented wild with 20 per cent whole bunches and two weeks on skins, then eighteen months in mostly used French hogsheads, five per cent of the final blend new. Bottled without fining or filtration, as all the estate reds are.
Blue and black fruit, pepper and a savoury, meaty undercurrent, with tannins that hold the line without drying out the finish. Give it 17 degrees and a decent glass. Roast lamb, ox cheek, or mushrooms and lentils braised with bay.
