Description
Byrne Farm Pinot Noir is a certified organic Pinot Noir from the Springvale block near Cargo in Orange.
Springvale, southwest of Orange, is believed to be the first certified organic vineyard in New South Wales, and its vines — roughly thirty years old, on their own roots at 820 metres — are among the region's oldest. Abel and 115 clones are planted, and in most years Jeff Byrne works only with Abel, which he prizes for its Christmas-spice perfume; he has taken fruit from the site for a dozen vintages. The ferment included 20 per cent carbonic maceration and 20 per cent whole bunches, with malolactic conversion and maturation in 500-litre French puncheons, barrels topped monthly, bottled after ten months. He picks in the high twelves and low thirteens.
Luminous red fruit, spice, earth and floral perfume, medium-bodied and slinky over feather-light tannin. A warmer season pushed it towards a Côte de Beaune shape. Serve at 14 degrees with roast duck, mushroom pasta, or grilled salmon.
