Description
Byrne Farm Pinot Noir is an organically grown Orange Pinot Noir from old, own-rooted vines.
The Springvale block outside Cargo holds Abel and 115 clones planted about thirty years ago on their own roots at 820 metres, on a site widely held to be the first certified organic vineyard in the state. Jeff Byrne has drawn fruit from here for a dozen vintages, mostly Abel for its Christmas-spice lift. This year everything was destemmed and sent to three-tonne open fermenters for a four-day cold soak, then ten days on skins. Pressed gently to 500-litre barrels, ten per cent of them new, and matured ten months before blending. A stint in Vosne-Romanée shows in the restraint.
Tight on opening, it grows dramatically in the glass — berry fruit, florals, spice, a saline and earthy edge. Fleshy but finely drawn, with silky tannin and fine length. Serve at 14 degrees: roast quail, duck rillettes, or a mushroom risotto.
