Description
Byrne Farm Pinot Noir is a cool-vintage Pinot Noir from the certified organic Springvale block in Orange.
Cooler conditions in 2022 pushed this towards purity and drive. The fruit is as always — Abel and 115 clones on their own roots at 820 metres, around thirty years old, on what is thought to be the first organically certified vineyard in New South Wales. Everything was destemmed, with plenty of whole berries kept intact to chase an airy style, cold-soaked four days and fermented ten days on skins. Jeff Byrne delayed sulphuring to prolong malolactic conversion and build texture through the middle, then matured the wine ten months in 500-litre barrels with 30 per cent new oak.
Red fruit power and intensity, smoked meat and earth beneath, a whisper of reduction over the top. Densely packed and finely drawn, with high-grown freshness into a savoury finish. Serve at 14 to 15 degrees with roast pork, duck ragù, or beetroot and goat's cheese.
