Ca' d'Gal Moscato d'Asti Sant'Ilario 2020

Ca' d'Gal Moscato d'Asti Sant'Ilario is a lightly sparkling, low-alcohol Piedmontese Moscato drawn from a single hectare of 70-year-old vines.

Moscato d'Asti is made from Moscato Bianco, the Italian name for Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, and is bottled at low pressure and low alcohol with the fermentation arrested to retain natural sweetness. Alessandro Boido's fruit for Sant'Ilario comes from a south-facing hillside at Cassinasco, some ten kilometres from the winery, on limestone-rich soils. Cassinasco is one of only 19 villages of the 52 in the Moscato DOCG included within the more recently ratified Canelli DOCG, a subzone where Moscato has been grown since the thirteenth century and where chalky soils and altitude suit the variety particularly well. Old vines and that site give a wine of unusual restraint for the category: fine and chalky in texture, with grapefruit and lemon sherbet on the nose and white peach, nectarine and lemon zest on a buoyant palate, closing salty and crystalline.

Drink it young, within a year or two of release. It handles hazelnut desserts and fruit tarts, but has enough mineral drive for savoury dishes too, much like a good Mosel Spätlese; serve at 8°C.
