Description

Cep by Cep Anjou Blanc is a dry Chenin Blanc grown on the dark schist of the Anjou Noir, west of Saumur.

Anjou Blanc is dry Chenin, planted mostly on schist and sandstone rather than the limestone found upriver. The soils are poor and drain hard, which suits a variety that can otherwise run to weight, and the wines carry a firm, stony line beneath the quince and orchard fruit. Cep by Cep is the label of Philippe Germain, brother of the Saumur grower Thierry Germain, and most of its fruit comes from Philippe's Château de la Roulerie, 42 hectares farmed organically on schist around the Coteaux du Layon; the estate's wines are also certified vegan. The house style across the range is deliberately unforced — dry Chenin picked ripe but not late, fermented without additions and raised in neutral vessels rather than new wood, so the grape and the schist do the work.

Drink over the next four or five years. Serve at 10–12°C with roast pork, grilled fish with beurre blanc or a semi-hard goat's cheese.
