Champagne Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru Millésime is a vintage Champagne from forty-year-old vines in Ambonnay, raised entirely in barrel.

Ambonnay is a Grand Cru village on the southern flank of the Montagne de Reims, south-facing and long regarded as one of the finest sources of Pinot Noir in the region. Egly-Ouriet, run by Francis Egly and now with the next generation alongside him, is its reference grower, known for low yields, very ripe fruit, long ageing on lees and minimal dosage. This cuvée is 70 per cent Pinot Noir and 30 per cent Chardonnay, with the grapes selected at harvest and the wine raised completely in barrel. Dosage was just 1 g/L. Francis Egly has described it as Montrachet with bubbles, a reference to its weight and vinosity rather than its style, and the extended cellar ageing before release is a significant part of what the wine is.

Layered and powerful, it drinks well now and will develop for a decade or more; serve with roast poultry, lobster or veal at about 8°C.
