Champagne Larmandier-Bernier Grand Cru Vieille Vigne du Levant 2012 Disg. Mar 2021

Champagne Larmandier-Bernier Vieille Vigne du Levant is a grand cru blanc de blancs from old Chardonnay in Cramant, disgorged in March 2021.

This cuvée was historically labelled Vieille Vigne de Cramant, and only the name has changed: it now refers to Bourron du Levant, the vineyard that supplies most of the fruit, planted in 1960. The balance comes from a half-hectare holding in the neighbouring terroir of Le Fond du Bâteau, where the vines are around seventy-five years old. Cramant is a grand cru of the Côte des Blancs, and these south-east facing plots on the flanks of the Butte de Saran catch the morning sun, giving unusually ripe, layered wines. Winemaking follows the pattern of all Larmandier’s single-terroir bottlings: natural fermentation and malolactic conversion, twelve months in large Stockinger casks and no filtration. This wine spends at least seven years on lees in bottle, and nearly nine in this case, and was disgorged with only two grams per litre of dosage.

Drinking well now and capable of another decade in a cool cellar. Serve at 8°C with roast chicken, scallops or a wedge of aged comté.
