Champagne Larmandier-Bernier Latitude is a Blanc de Blancs drawn entirely from the clay-richer southern side of Vertus, at the foot of the Côte des Blancs.

Vertus is the southernmost of the major Côte des Blancs villages, and its soils carry more clay than the pure chalk further north. Larmandier-Bernier is a grower estate working its own land there, and the parcels behind Latitude all sit at roughly the same latitude on the southern side of the village, which gives the cuvée its name and hints at the breadth of texture the clay provides. In the cellar the wine is handled mostly in large-format casks, almost all now sourced from Stockinger in Austria. Alcoholic fermentation and malolactic conversion run naturally, and there is no filtration. Bottles mature for more than two years before hand disgorgement, with dosage set at extra-brut levels — 3 g/L in this case — at least six months before release. The blend is based on 2021 with 40 per cent reserve wine from a perpetual reserve started in 2004.

Ready now and capable of three to five years. Serve at around 8°C with fish terrine, lemon roast chicken or a plate of hard cheeses.
