Château Capbern 2019

Château Capbern is a classic Left Bank blend from Saint-Estèphe, the northernmost of the Médoc's famous communes.

Owned alongside the neighbouring Château Calon-Ségur, the property benefits from the same vineyard and cellar team, and its wines have gained real polish under the current owners. Vines are planted on well-drained gravel over clay on slopes facing the Gironde, a setting that suits Cabernet Sauvignon and softens the extremes of frost and heat. Merlot adds flesh to the blend and Petit Verdot a touch of spice and colour. After fermentation the wine spends time in French barrels before bottling. In 2019, a warm and sunny Bordeaux year, it gives dark fruit and spice, a suave entry and fine tannins, finishing with real sapidity.

Pour at 16 to 18 degrees with rib-eye, beef and mushroom pie or a platter of hard cheese. Give it half an hour in a decanter if drinking now, or cellar it for another five to ten years.
