Château Closiot Barsac Cuvée Bonneau 375ml 2018

Château Closiot Barsac Cuvée Bonneau is a sweet Bordeaux from a Barsac clos surrounded by Climens, Doisy-Védrines and Coutet, now in the hands of Jean-Marie Guffens.

Barsac is the northern commune of the Sauternes appellation, flatter and more limestone-based than Sauternes proper, and its wines carry a little more tension for it. Guffens, the Belgian behind Verget and Domaine des Deux Roches in the Mâconnais, has been a Sauternes obsessive since a 1976 visit to Bordeaux and bought the historic Château Closiot from Bernard Sirot. The property covers eight hectares on the Clos Bonneau, where red earth dotted with pebbles sits on the limestone plateau, planted almost entirely to Sémillon and including four hectares of hundred-year-old vines. Rather than picking in the morning mist, Guffens harvests under the first sun to get concentrated botrytis, selecting berries across six passes over ten days. The wine spends a year in 50% new oak, then twelve months back in vat to hold its freshness. This is the 375ml format.

Drinking well now and built for twenty years or more. Serve at 8-10°C with foie gras, almond tart or Roquefort.
