Description
Chateau d'Aiguilhe, Cotes de Castillon is a Right Bank Bordeaux from an appellation that sits, quite literally, next door to Saint-Emilion.
Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux takes its name from the battle of Castillon in 1453, which ended the Hundred Years War and English rule in Aquitaine. The appellation continues the limestone plateau that runs east from Saint-Émilion, and its wines are built on Merlot with Cabernet Franc in support, yet its land has always cost a fraction of its neighbour's. Château d'Aiguilhe is one of the properties that made the case for the area, having been bought and restored by Stephan von Neipperg, whose family also owns Canon-La-Gaffelière in Saint-Émilion. The vineyard lies high on the plateau on clay over limestone. The same team works across the von Neipperg properties, which is much of why the wine punches above its address.
It rewards a few years in the cellar, and suits roast beef, duck or hard cheeses.
