Description
Château de Pitray La Prairies is a Merlot-led red from Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux, on the eastern edge of the Saint-Émilion plateau.
Castillon takes its name from Castillon-la-Bataille, the town on the Dordogne where the final battle of the Hundred Years' War was fought in 1453. The appellation's limestone plateau and clay slopes are a continuation of Saint-Émilion's, the boundary between the two being administrative rather than geological, and the wines are made from much the same varieties: Merlot in the lead, with Cabernet Franc and, here, a little Malbec, a grape once widespread across Bordeaux and now confined to a few pockets. Château de Pitray lies at Gardegan-et-Tourtirac and is one of the larger properties in the appellation, long held by the family whose name it carries.
It suits grilled steak, duck and hard cheeses, and is best served at around 16 to 17 degrees.
