Château d'Yquem 1er Grand Cru Classé Supérieur en 1855 2021

Château d'Yquem is the only Sauternes ranked Premier Cru Supérieur in 1855, and for many it is the greatest sweet wine in the world.

The estate belonged to the Lur-Saluces family for more than two centuries before LVMH became the owner in 1999. Its vineyard crowns a hill in the heart of Sauternes, with a mix of gravel, sand and clay soils and an extensive network of drains beneath the vines. Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc are harvested by hand in many successive passes, as pickers return again and again to collect only berries shrivelled by noble rot. The wine is fermented and aged in new oak barrels before bottling. 2021 was a difficult year across Bordeaux, with spring frost cutting yields, yet this vintage is lively and fresh, rich at its core, with a touch of candied bitterness on a long, suave finish.

Serve chilled, around 10 to 12 degrees, in a white wine glass. Seared foie gras, Roquefort, lobster in a rich sauce or a simple bowl of roasted stone fruit all work well. Yquem is famously long-lived, so this can be cellared for many decades.
