Description
Château Gloria Cru Bourgeois is a Saint-Julien assembled in the twentieth century, parcel by parcel, from land sold off by the commune's classified growths.
Henri Martin, a cooper's son who became mayor of Saint-Julien and a leading figure in the Médoc wine trade, built Gloria from the 1940s onward by buying small blocks from neighbouring classified estates as they came on the market. Because the 1855 classification is fixed to the properties as they stood at the time, the resulting vineyard carries no rank of its own despite sitting on the same gravel croupes as its famous neighbours. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blend, filled out by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a little Petit Verdot, and the wine is matured in French oak. The property remains in family hands alongside Château Saint-Pierre.
A wine for roast lamb, beef and game birds, served at 16 to 18 degrees and decanted while young.
