Description
Château Léoville Barton, 3ème Grand Cru Classé en 1855 is a Saint-Julien third growth that has stayed in the hands of one Anglo-Irish family since the 1820s.
Hugh Barton, a merchant from an Irish family long established in Bordeaux, bought Langoa in 1821 and a quarter of the great Léoville estate five years later. The two have been farmed together ever since, and Léoville Barton is one of the rare classified growths with no château building of its own; its wine is made and aged in the cellars at Langoa. Saint-Julien occupies deep gravel croupes between Pauillac and Margaux and is regarded as the most even in quality of the Médoc communes. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blend, with Merlot and a little Cabernet Franc, raised in French oak in a style deliberately built for age.
Roast lamb, aged beef and hard cheeses all suit it.
