Description
Château Mouton Rothschild, 1ème G.C.C, 1855 is the Pauillac estate that forced the only change ever made to the 1855 classification.
Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild bought the property, then called Brane-Mouton, in 1853, two years before the classification ranked it at the head of the second growths. Baron Philippe de Rothschild took charge in 1922 and spent half a century arguing for promotion, which finally came in 1973. He was also the first in the Médoc to bottle his entire crop at the château, from 1924, and from 1945 he commissioned a different artist each year to illustrate the label, among them Braque, Picasso, Bacon and Freud. The vineyard lies on deep gravel at the northern end of Pauillac, next to Lafite, and is planted overwhelmingly to Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot and Cabernet Franc completing the blend.
Serve with roast lamb, beef or game, decant young bottles for an hour or two, and allow the finest vintages many years in the cellar.
