Description
Chateau Musar L'Arack de Musar is the Hochar family's take on arak, the aniseed spirit that has been Lebanon's national drink for centuries.
Arak is made across the Levant, and at Musar it begins with the estate's indigenous white grapes, Obaideh and Merwah, which grow on the Bekaa plateau and have been cultivated in Lebanon since antiquity. The wine made from them is distilled in copper pot stills, then redistilled with wild green aniseed gathered in the Bekaa, a step that gives arak its character and its habit of turning cloudy when water is added. The spirit is then rested before bottling. Musar has been in family hands since 1930 and applies the same unhurried approach here as it does to its wines. Arak is drunk with food rather than after it, and it is inseparable from Lebanese hospitality.
Arak is traditionally poured into a glass, topped with water and only then given ice, and drunk slowly alongside mezze.
