Château Palmer 3ème Grand Cru Classé 2009

Château Palmer 3ème Grand Cru Classé is a Third Growth Margaux of real stature, and this bottling comes from 2009, one of the finest Bordeaux vintages of recent decades.

Since the 1930s the estate has been in the hands of two families, the Sichels and the Mähler-Besses, with Thomas Duroux leading the team since 2004. The vineyard covers gravel ridges in Cantenac and Margaux, and only the best parcels go into the grand vin, with the balance used for the second wine, Alter Ego. A Merlot-rich blend is the house signature, softened and perfumed by that grape, then tightened by Cabernet Sauvignon and seasoned with Petit Verdot. The 2009 growing season was long, dry and warm, delivering fully ripe fruit. The result is deep in colour, with blackcurrant, blackberry and spice, rich tannin and a caressing texture.

Still youthful at heart, this benefits from an hour or two in a decanter before serving at 16 to 18 degrees. Try it with a porterhouse from the barbecue, venison loin or hard sheep's milk cheeses, or keep it in the cellar for another decade or more.
