Description
Chateau Palmer Historical XIXth Century Wine No. 17 revives a nineteenth century Bordeaux practice: blending a little northern Rhone Syrah into a Medoc red.
In the 1800s the finest clarets were sometimes hermitage, that is strengthened with wine from Hermitage in the Rhone, and merchants sold these bottlings at a premium above the straight Bordeaux. Chateau Palmer, a Third Growth in Margaux with a long history of its own, brought the idea back in the modern era, combining its Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with Syrah. Because the blend crosses appellation boundaries it cannot legally be labelled Margaux and is released instead as a Vin de France. Quantities are small, the wine is made only in some years, and each bottling carries a lot number rather than a vintage on the label.
Decant an hour ahead and serve at around 17 degrees with roast lamb, beef or duck. It is a curiosity with a serious history behind it, and it will hold happily in the cellar for some years.
*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur. If you are after a specific vintage, please contact us prior to ordering.
