Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2020

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a Pauillac Second Growth, known to many simply as Pichon Comtesse or Pichon Lalande, and the 2020 is a powerful yet polished young vintage.

The original Pichon estate was divided in the mid-nineteenth century, and this half passed to Virginie de Pichon Longueville, Comtesse de Lalande, whose name it still carries. Ranked a Second Growth in 1855, its vineyards border Château Latour, with some parcels reaching into neighbouring Saint-Julien. The Champagne house Louis Roederer bought the estate in 2007 and has since rebuilt the cellars and refined work in the vineyard. The blend once carried a generous share of Merlot, the source of its famous charm, but Cabernet Sauvignon now leads, supported by Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The 2020 shows blackcurrant, blackberry, peony and Pauillac's classic cedar over structured, smooth tannins.

Serve at around 17 to 18 degrees. It is still young, so decant for a couple of hours if drinking now, or better still lay it down for ten years or more. Enjoy it with rare roast beef, a herb-crusted lamb rack or a firm aged cheddar.
