Description

Chichibu Ichiro's Malt Wine Wood Reserve is a pure malt matured in wine-seasoned French oak, bottled at 46.5% ABV.

Like the other Leaf Series bottlings, this brings together single malts from Hanyu and Chichibu. The Hanyu portion matured in French oak that had previously held Japanese red wine; the Chichibu portion spent its time in Ovum casks — 20-hectolitre egg-shaped French oak vessels shaped by Taransaud in the Charente. Wine-cask finishes are notoriously hard to land, and plenty of distillers steer clear of them altogether, which is part of why this bottling has the reputation it does. The colour is deep and entirely natural.

A vinous nose with nut, berry and spice, then a spicy palate balanced by sweetness and a close tinged with dark chocolate and faint smoke. Serve neat at room temperature in a tulip glass. Water is optional here; ice is not recommended.
