Coeur Clémentine Côtes de Provence Rosé 2018

Coeur Clémentine Côtes de Provence Rosé is a pale, direct-pressed Provençal rosé from a label started by two outsiders to the region.

Côtes de Provence runs inland from the coast between Marseille and Nice across limestone, schist and sandy clay, and rosé accounts for most of what it makes. Coeur Clémentine was founded in 2006 by Steve Veytia, from a Napa grape-growing family, and Pierre Arosteguy, whose family has run the Maison Arostéguy grocery business in the Basque country for five generations; the first vintage was released in 2008. Fruit is grown and hand-harvested in the belt of the appellation the owners call the Golden Triangle, and the house works to organic principles. The wine is direct-pressed, which is what keeps the colour so light, then fermented cool in inert vessels without oak. Grenache leads the blend, with Cinsault and a little of the Provençal variety Tibouren, which is credited with the wild-herb scent of the region.

Drink young, within two or three years of the vintage. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled prawns, a salade niçoise or barbecued chicken.
