Condado de Haza Ribera del Duero Crianza 2018

Condado de Haza is Alejandro Fernández's second Ribera del Duero property, on the steep river bank between Roa and La Horra.

Having shown in the mid-1980s with Pesquera that world-class wine could be made in Ribera del Duero without being Vega Sicilia, Fernández went looking for a second site. The slope he chose had been abandoned for years and consisted of hundreds of small parcels in separate and stubborn ownership; three years of patient consolidation followed before the first vintage was made in 1988. The estate lies in the province of Burgos, an area of rocky soils and a cooler sub-climate, higher than Pesquera and tempered by the proximity of the river. Hot days drive ripeness while cold nights hold acidity, giving fleshy wines that stay fresh and sappy. Where Pesquera is fine, compact and iron-edged, Condado de Haza runs plumper, more textural and more rugged in structure. Winemaking mirrors the senior estate: late hand harvesting, natural fermentation, vinification parcel by parcel, eighteen months in barrique and bottling without filtration.

Drink now with air or cellar for up to a decade. Suited to roast lamb, grilled beef or a strong sheep's cheese; serve at 16-18°C.
