Corofin Marlborough Chardonnay 2022

Corofin Marlborough Chardonnay is the second release of the estate's village-level blend, from two Brancott Valley vineyards.

The regional label is newly minted, but the material behind it is anything but ordinary — the fruit comes from the same sites as the single-vineyard bottlings. This year Wrekin takes 55 per cent and Folium 45. Wrekin is a small, BioGro-certified and biodynamically farmed block at the top of the valley; Folium, planted by Fromm in 1996, is dry-grown and organically tended on Southern Valley clay over gravelly silt, with Corofin working only five rows. Wrekin was picked on 19 March, Folium three days later. All the fruit was pressed gently as bunches to seasoned puncheons and two stainless barrels for fermentation and malolactic conversion, then twelve months there and eight in tank.

Citrus and white stone fruit with a nutty lees note, the acid line taut and the finish long and faintly chalky. It drinks well above its station. Serve at 12 degrees: grilled fish, roast chicken with lemon, or mussels in white wine.
