Corofin Wrekin Vineyard Chardonnay 2019

Corofin Wrekin Vineyard Chardonnay is a tightly wound Marlborough Chardonnay from a biodynamically farmed block.

Hand-harvested and whole-bunch pressed, this fermented on wild yeast and high solids in three 500-litre seasoned French oak puncheons plus a single 300-litre stainless barrel, was racked to tank after five months and left on lees for another five before bottling unfined and unfiltered. The vineyard was planted in 2002 at the top of the Brancott Valley, almost in a locality of its own — certified organic under BioGro and farmed biodynamically, on clay-rich soils over greywacke mother rock. Mike Paterson credits the site with exceptional individuality, and it gives him both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Gripping and taut, with salivating drive and chalky texture rippling across the palate. There is fruit here, but line and energy are what register. Serve at 12 degrees. Oysters, grilled whiting, or raw fish with lemon.
