Denton Chardonnay 2023

Denton Chardonnay is a Yarra Valley Chardonnay drawn mainly from Block 6 on the estate cool northern face.

Block 6 sits on the north-eastern slope, where the morning light is soft and the afternoon sun never really lands, which is why this corner of the hill holds acidity so well. The clone here is Bernard 95, valued for its fine citrus line and tight mineral spine, and in 2023 a small parcel of close-planted Gingin from Block 4 joined it, the same block that supplies the close-planted Pinot Noir. Hand picking happened on 10 March. Bunches went straight into 500-litre puncheons for fermentation, one of them brand new, and the wine spent ten months on fine lees with occasional stirring.

Lemon curd, white nectarine and crushed oyster shell, with the lees work showing as texture instead of weight. Ten to twelve degrees, and give it air. Good with grilled snapper, chicken schnitzel, a bowl of mussels, or Gruyère on toast.
