Denton Shed Nebbiolo 2023

Denton Shed Nebbiolo is a light-handed Yarra Valley Nebbiolo made for early drinking.

Halfway up the north-western slope of the cone, the Nebbiolo block gets the granite-rich soil, the elevation and the exposure that a difficult, late variety needs to ripen properly. Several clones are planted; Mat 111 and Mat 9 are the ones bottled under the Shed label. Half the fruit fermented in small open-top vessels and the other half in a plastic egg shipped over from Germany, which says something about the willingness to try things that runs through this range. The wine was pressed off skins early, keeping the berry fruit forward and the tannins from taking over.

Fresh red cherry, cranberry and a dusting of dried herbs, with light, sappy tannin. This is a red to chill for twenty minutes, and 13 to 14 degrees suits it. Serve with prosciutto, a margherita pizza, grilled tuna, or a bowl of pasta and tomato.
