Denton Shed Nebbiolo 2023

Denton Shed Nebbiolo is a Yarra Valley Nebbiolo built for freshness and served slightly chilled.

Nebbiolo is marginal almost everywhere outside Piedmont, which is why the mid-slope position matters so much: granite-loaded soil, a bit of altitude and full exposure on the north-western face give the long, slow growing conditions the variety demands. Mat 111 and Mat 9 are the two clones chosen from the block for this bottling. The ferment was split, half in small open-top vessels and half in a German-made plastic egg, and the wine came off skins early so the berry fruit stayed to the front. Alongside the estate's serious Nebbiolo, this is the version made to drink young.

Redcurrant, sour cherry and rose, with a tannin frame that is present but never hard, and a finish that stays juicy. Twenty minutes in the fridge, then pour at about 14 degrees. Charcuterie, roast tomato pasta, grilled sardines, or a plate of cured olives.
