Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre Edmond 2018

Cuvée Edmond is Alphonse Mellot's barrel-fermented Sancerre from the oldest Sauvignon vines in La Moussière, named for Alphonse-Edmond Mellot.

Sancerre lies at the eastern end of the Loire, on the hills above the river, where Sauvignon Blanc is grown on shelly caillottes, marly terres blanches and flinty silex. The Mellot family have made wine here since 1513, and for eighteen generations the eldest son has been christened Alphonse; the nineteenth generation, Alphonse Junior and his sister Emmanuelle, now run the domaine. It works around forty-seven hectares, of which thirty make up the Domaine de La Moussière on the slopes below the town, on marl, Kimmeridgian limestone, flint and clay, farmed organically and certified biodynamic. Edmond honours the father of Alphonse Senior and is drawn from the oldest parcels within La Moussière, vines running from forty years to a century and beyond, cropped at around 40 hectolitres per hectare. Unlike a Sancerre made in tank it is fermented in oak, most of it new and the rest one and two years old, then left on its lees for up to fourteen months.

It rewards a few years in bottle and will hold for a decade; serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, goat's cheese or roast chicken.
