Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre La Moussière comes from the family's home vineyard, one of the great sites of the eastern Loire.

Sancerre sits at the eastern end of the Loire Valley, where Sauvignon Blanc grows on three principal soil types: silex, caillottes and Kimmeridgian marl, the last of these shared with Chablis. La Moussière is a gently rolling amphitheatre of very stony, limestone-rich ground on ancient Saint-Doulchard marl, and the Mellot family has long been its emblematic grower. The vineyard is farmed biodynamically and cropped at low yields. Half of the wine ferments in large wooden fermenters and is raised in oak casks, while the balance ferments and rests in traditional concrete vats before the two components are blended. Élevage on fine lees runs for roughly twelve months, which builds the deep, pulpy texture the cuvée is known for. The oak does not blunt the wine's purity; if anything it reads closer to a white Burgundy than to the tank-raised Sancerre most drinkers know.

Drinks well now and will hold for five years or more. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled whiting, Crottin de Chavignol or asparagus.
