Description
Les Romains is a flint-soiled lieu-dit south of the town of Sancerre, named after the Roman road that ran down to the river crossing.
The site lies over the fault line that cuts through the appellation, on a vein of flint, and while that suggests kinship with Pouilly-Fumé across the Loire, the vines here do not have to root far before they reach pure limestone. It is one of only a handful of Mellot cuvées from outside La Moussière. The vineyard covers 1.9 hectares planted at 9,000 vines per hectare, and Vacheron and Gitton Père et Fils also hold parcels in it, several of them worked biodynamically, as Mellot's own vines are. The grapes were hand-picked, as all the domaine's fruit is, fermented in 13-hectolitre tronconique casks and left on fine lees for twelve months before bottling.
Best given a year or two and good for up to eight; serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, veal or a hard goat's cheese.
