Description
Domaine Chermette Beaujolais Les Griottes is the estate's entry-level bottling, from 30- to 40-year-old vines on dark granite around the family home, offered in magnum.
Southern Beaujolais is usually associated with lighter soils and simpler wine, but the ground around Saint-Vérand where Pierre-Marie Chermette is based is dark granite, and the vines here are considerably older than the regional average at 30 to 40 years. Chermette has been a leading voice for traditional Beaujolais for decades, making wine with minimal intervention and low sulphur at a time when neither was fashionable. The method for Les Griottes has not changed in that time: traditional whole-bunch, semi-carbonic fermentation in concrete tanks, followed by maturation in a combination of tank and ancient oak casks that contribute no new-wood character. The result is a Beaujolais of real fruit definition and drinkability, with more depth than the appellation label implies, and it remains one of the reference points for the style in Australia.
Drink now and over the next three or four years. Serve lightly cool at around 16°C with charcuterie, roast pork or a simple tomato pasta.
