Domaine Chermette Beaujolais Les Griottes 2021

Domaine Chermette Beaujolais Les Griottes is the family's entry-level red, from thirty- to forty-year-old vines on dark granite around the home estate.

Saint-Vérand sits at the southern end of Beaujolais, and the Chermette family's home vineyards surround the house there, on dark granite soils. Les Griottes is the starting point of the range, drawn from vines of thirty to forty years of age, which is old for a wine at this price anywhere in the region. The winemaking has been unchanged for decades: traditional whole-bunch, semi-carbonic fermentation in concrete tanks, followed by maturation in a combination of tank and ancient oak casks that contribute no flavour of their own. Pierre-Marie and Martine Chermette have long been associated with an unforced, traditional reading of Beaujolais, made when much of the region was going the other way, and this bottling is the plainest statement of that position in their range.

Drink young, ideally within two or three years. Serve at 14-16°C, lightly chilled, with charcuterie, roast chicken or a simple pasta.
