Description
Domaine Chermette Beaujolais Les Griottes, in a 375ml half bottle, comes from thirty- to forty-year-old Gamay on dark granite in southern Beaujolais.
The straight Beaujolais appellation covers the gentler, southern half of the region, below the ten crus that sit on the granite hills to the north. Domaine Chermette farms at Saint-Vérand, and Les Griottes is the estate’s entry-level red, drawn from vines of thirty to forty years around the family home on dark granite soils. The winemaking has been unchanged for decades: traditional whole-bunch, semi-carbonic fermentation in concrete tanks, then maturation in a combination of tank and old oak casks. Where the estate’s Moulin-à-Vent and Fleurie are built for the cellar, the aim here is a bright, cherry-fruited wine for drinking young, and the half bottle suits that purpose neatly.
Drink now and over the next couple of years, lightly chilled. Serve at 14-16°C with charcuterie, roast chicken or a simple pasta.
