Domaine Chermette Beaujolais Les Griottes 375ml 2022

Domaine Chermette Beaujolais Les Griottes, in a 375ml half bottle, is the estate’s entry-level Gamay from dark granite soils in southern Beaujolais.

Southern Beaujolais is the larger, gentler half of the region, where the straight Beaujolais appellation sits below the ten crus of the north. Domaine Chermette is based at Saint-Vérand, and Les Griottes comes from thirty- to forty-year-old vines on the dark granite around the family home. The winemaking has not changed in decades: traditional whole-bunch, semi-carbonic fermentation in concrete tanks, then maturation in a mix of tank and old oak casks. Where Chermette’s Moulin-à-Vent and Fleurie are made to age, the aim here is something lighter, bright and cherry-fruited, built for early drinking rather than the cellar. The nose is exuberant, with wild plum and violet, and the palate carries the same tangy berry and cherrystone character.

Drink now and over the next two years, lightly chilled if you like. Serve at 14-16°C with charcuterie, roast chicken or a simple tomato pasta.
